Day 22 (15): Ritmo!
Yes, that is a Black Eyed Peas reference. But it's also what's happening right now.
Breakfast was lovely today, as was our worship time. I'm still just camping out in 1 John 4 in my times with God. I really do recommend memorizing passages of scripture like that. It pulls you in to examining each word and thinking about the passage and its context differently.

1 John 4 is the chapter that's all about love and stuff, but it interestingly starts with a warning against false prophets and denial of the incarnation. It most recently stands out to me that in verse 12, it says that when we love one another, God's love is made complete in us. Nice-sounding verse, right? But is that implying that God's love is incomplete? I think so. I think the fullness and completion of God's love is when his children love one another. It's like a triangle. If a parent has two kids and the parent loves them both, but they don't love each other...it feels like something is missing, right? Or, if you have ever had friends who don't get along with each other, it feels like there's a tear in the fabric. Like, how can you be complete in your love for them if they hate each other?
I think that's what God sees in the world. People ask all the time how God can be loving when the world is so broken, and I think they see it. It's incomplete. But the fullness and completion will come. Maranatha.
Spotify stopped working now, because it realized I am in Costa Rica. Of course I am, Spotify, now let me listen to my music. Oh well.
We went to the CDI today and had the big kids. It was a fun day, we danced and read the Bible together and made paper fish and practiced writing music and introduced a new memory verse. They got the first one down quickly, even though they hadn't memorized it before. I got to lead some math practice, which was fun, but the kids are at vastly different levels.
After the time with the kids, we had Guitar Classes at the CDI, but a few of the kids stayed. Three stayed to learn Guitar, two stayed because their brother stayed to learn guitar. Matthew is k i l l i n g it still with teaching guitar in Spanish, btw. I sat and traced out some chord charts for the students to take home, then played Go Fish with the kids that were just chilling there. We've been hanging out with these kids for 3 weeks, but Naomi decided my name was Seth. When her sister told her it was Samuel, she thought about it for a second, and said, "le voy a llamar Seth." So, that's what she calls me now. Her brother, Andres, calls me Sam Chispas,* so I guess renaming me runs in the family.
After guitar, we walked to the bus stop and hopped on the bus, then it started raining, so we walked faster from the bus to our Airbnb. Katie and Matthew made tacos for dinner, which was lovely. We watched a movie, and now we sleep.
We're really operating in a good rhythm as a team right now (thanks for your prayers), which is enjoyable. We have been here 3 weeks, which means we have just 2 weeks left. That means after this week, we'll have 1 more full week at the CDI, then maybe a couple of days the week we leave. We leave on a Wednesday. We're taking steps to transition the things we've started over to the people here, but even with a pre-made schedule and stuff, it'd be a heavy workload for just Georgen and the Lagos to do on their own. I really hope students from H@ngout start stepping in. I am curious to see long-term what the CDI's interactions with the kids in Barrio Mexico look like.
Prayer:
- for God to transition the work at the CDI to the peeps here and grow and change it as necessary to become sustainable
- for our team to take full advantage of the time we have left here
- for the church here to continue to be led by the Spirit as they grow and adapt
- for student leaders to step up and be a part of what God's doing in H@ngout
- for salvations; for people to see and taste God's love being made complete in the church here and find him through it.
